Rights of Husband
Qawwam: protectors/maintainers, this is sometimes translated as guardian (for women), however some people say that women do not need a guardian! But because men are physically stronger they are given this duty and also because they have the financial obligation of all requirements, thus are given the status of qawwam. So because they (men) are your (women) qawwam you have to be of obedience to them.
In a hadith the Prophet Mohammad (SallAllaho Alaihi Wasallam) gives men 10 rights and says: "These wives are good for you who:-
1- Give children – this is not the literal meaning. It should be a woman who wants children but not two or three children for fashion like in the west. But this doesn’t mean that a woman should have loads of children, it means that she should be prepared for having children. And a woman who refuses to have children in Islam is not good at all. The fashion statement of the number of children within the west will be a huge problem as less children are beign born, thus won’t be able to support the elder generation economically…etc!
2- Loving
3- Hides her husband’s faults – gossiping about your husband’s faults is very bad!
4- Considerate for her family
5- Respectful/Humble – must be nice and listen to what your husband is saying. The husband is the head of the family and does have the upper hand in the marriage. The above five things extracted from the hadith are the things a husband should get and deserves.
6-Beautifies herself for her husband
7- Ghair (tower castle) – hides her beauty from anyone who isn’t her mahram
8- Should listen to her husband when he is says something
9- Obeys orders – unless the order is against Allah and His Rasool (SAW). Anything within shariah (lawful) she must fulfill it in order to keep the marriage happy. In marriage you need a leader who makes the final decisions and this is given to the husband as he is made stronger and has to support the family financially (which is difficult), so he has the right to be obeyed.
10- Kalwath (when with the husband alone must keep him happy)
A woman cannot leave the house without permission from the husband, but ‘implied consent’ = if agree to leave and he is ok with it. But the reason being for this is infact for the protection of the woman!
